Tropical seas once covered the Arctic and Climate Change has gone through many changes over the last 400 million years. Fishes that swam in these hot waters, back in those days, now tell scientists about the environmnet and its changes over the ages, as shown through the Fossil Record.

Severe Weather Study

Thunderstorms, tornadoes and other severe weather is being studied under a project called UN-STABLE (understanding Severe Thunderstorms and Alberta Boundary Layers Experiment). It aims at better understanding thunderstorm initiation, which it hopes will improve weather forecasting.

Violent 2008 Summer Weather

Forecasters predict that this summer of 2008 will be hot and dry on the Canadian Prairies and the USA northern States.
This means that the Jet stream is moving further north and Tornado Alley will also move northward from its normal Mid-western position. Tornadoes have already touched down in southern Manitoba.

Arctic Warming

The Arctic is warming at a rate that is three times that of the rest of the world according to Bartley Kives writing in the Winnipeg Free Press after he spent two weeks aboard the ice-breaker Amundsen. He was among scientists trying to learn more about the air, water, ice, plants and animals in the Arctic region. They estimate that completely ice-free Arctic waters are coming to this planet by 2013 to 2030.

Icebergs

Icebergs in the Antarctic area sometimes have stripes,�formed by�layers of snow�that react to different conditions.Blue stripes are often created when a crevice in the ice sheet�fills�up with meltwater�and freezes so quickly that no�bubbles form.When an iceberg falls into the sea, a layer of salty seawater�can�freeze�to the underside. Wind Power

Wind is air in motion. This invisible force can be powerful and destructive; but it can also be harnessed to generate clean electric power. Wind turbines with long propeller blades, erected in clusters, or wind farms, can be used to replace coal and oil fired plants that are belching pollution into the atmosphere. Farmers living near these turbines are voicing concerns about noise and hazards to birds and planes. In Manitoba the wind farms are being built one kilometer away from residences, so that noise and vision obstructions will be negligible.

Slowing the Warming

Warming of the atmosphere could be slowed down…but it would be expensive and it could have side affects.
The process would involve sending reflective material into the atmosphere, such as sulphur or aerosols that would send the sun’s radiation back into space.
This happened when Mount Pinatubo erupted in 1991. Millions of tons of sulphur dioxide were sent into the air.
Earth’s temperature dropped by 0.25 degrees Celsius.

Dinosaurs

Nobody knows what caused the dinosaurs to disappear, but we all know that mankind is causing mass extinction of wildlife currently.
Forests are being cut down and waterways are being polluted. This destroys animals, fish and bird’s habitats, so they are being left homeless.
We are using great amounts of water to extract oil from the oil sands of Alberta. Tons of coal, oil and gas are being burned to add to the pollution of the atmosphere. It’s threatening our planet with disaster

Montana Glaciers

Notice how the deep ice and snow have disappeared. Will global warming

erode the glaciers to nothing and leave Montana as a desert.?

The Arctic airmass is dry and skies are clear at 7 a.m.

Global Warming benefits

degrees wouldn't be so bad for a northern country like Russia.
We could spend less on fur coats and the grain harvest would go up."

Mountain Clouds

The object in this photo is not a jet plane or
a flying saucer. It is a cloud called lenticularis,
meaning shaped like a lens. These lens shaped
clouds form when moist air cools as it is forced
up and over a hill or mountain.
This beautiful, dramatic cloud is a common sight
in mountainous regions of the world.

Climate Change

In this 21st century our descendants have a most important issue to deal with--Climate Change.
There is a possibility that economies may crumble. Even civilization, as we know it, could disintegrate unless we learn to control "greenhouse-gas" emissions. Global warming is already affecting our world and our daily lives.

Arctic Airmass

It is hard to think about Global Warming when an Arctic Airmass moves southward over Canada and mid western USA. These airmasses bring extremely cold temperatures as they flow from the north, and drop minimum readings to well below normal, but the overall effect does not change the general warming trend.

Saving the Environment
